HaLoはヴォーカルのayakoを中心としたプロジェクトでメンバーは固定されておらず、世界中のアーティストたちと常に新しいコラボレーションを展開していく「集合体」。今回「blue」参加アーティスト陣はなんと!! ルイ・フィリップ、デイヴ・グレゴリー(ex. XTC)、ダニー・カミングス(ex. ダイアー・ストレイツ)、ケイト・セント・ジョン(ex. ドリーム・アカデミー)等々、普通じゃ考えられない夢の共演を実現!! アコースティックな楽曲を中心に「和み」と「ポップセンス」両方合わせ持ったとても心地よく、とても優しいアルバムです。

初めて沖縄の透明な深い海の「青」を見たとき、色の力を思いました。そして「青」と一言で言っても、人によって違うだろうな…ましてや住んでいる国や、気候が違ったら、違うイメージを持っているだろうな…そんなことをふと思いました。それがこの色彩シリーズの構想の発端です。このアルバムのカヴァー・ジャケットは沖縄の座間味の海の中で撮りました。そして、その写真を見せつつ、レコーディングを進めました。HaLoの"blue"のグラデーションを聴いてください。

The first time I saw the 'blue' of the deep, clear sea of Okinawa, I was struck by the power of colour. Even to say that one word 'blue', means different things to different people, and for someone from a different country or climate, how much more does that image change? All these things passed through my mind. And that was the starting point for the concept of this "colour" series of albums. The jacket of this album was shot underwater in the sea at Zamami in Okinawa. I kept this photograph close to me and showed it to people often as recording progressed. I hope you enjoy HaLo's shade of blue.

解説原稿

　HaLoは東京在住の歌手／作詞家／作曲家／編曲家／写真家ayakoの声と言葉を中心に生まれた開かれたプロジェクトです。そこにはayakoと夢を共有できるさまざまな人たちが流動的に関わっており、ayakoはそれを「ゆるやかな集合体」と語っています。

　色彩をモチーフに『ブルー』『イエロー』『グリーン』3枚のアルバムを世界各地の人たちと一緒に作るというのがHaLoの構想のはじまりでした。1998年にayakoとプロデューサーの藤井暁は、無数のＥメールや電話やファックスと格闘して、友人たちと打ち合わせしながら、さらなる協力者を求めて地球を裏側まで駆け巡り、数多くの賛同者と出会いました。レコーディングは主にその年の暮れから1999年3月にかけて、東京(日本)、ロンドン(イギリス)、ヘルシンキ(フィンランド)、ドノスティア (バスク)、クアラルンプール(マレイシア)などで行なわれました。そしてまず出来上ってきたのがこの『ブルー』というわけです。

　国境を越えたアーティスト間のコラボレーションはけっして珍しくありません。しかし曲作りの段階からアイデアを綿密に交換し、それを想像力で縦横無尽に膨らませたこのアルバムは、お仕着せの企画や拙速なセッションで作られたものとは根本的にちがっています。日本のアーティストが陥りがちな模倣と敬意の混同とも無縁なら、着地先のない無国籍音楽をめざしたわけでもありません。アクースティックな楽器を中心にした透明感のある繊細な演奏とayakoの優しい歌には、上質のポップ・スタンダードのみが持ちうる親しみやすさや落ち着きが感じられます。

　まっすぐで、柔らかくて、軽やかで、せつなくて、なつかしい……この音楽を聞いてぼくが思い浮かべたのは、初夏の夜明けの空の下で見る草木の幻想的な美しさでした。それはアルバムに関わった人たちが自分の中に自然を、そしてそれを感知する能力を持っているからでしょう。かわいた体においしい水がしみこんでくるように、このアルバムの音楽は心にしみます。音楽が自己顕示や自己憐憫や技術や商品である前に、人々の心と体をむすぶ波動から生まれてくるものであることをこのアルバムは思い出させてくれます。

　最後に、主要参加メンバーについて、曲解説でふれられていないことを一言ずつ紹介しておきましょう。ティモ・アラコティラはトラッド・フィドル・グループJPPをはじめ4つのグループのレギュラー・メンバーとして活躍しているフィンランドのピアニスト／ハルモニウム奏者。フィンランドを代表するアコーディオン奏者の一人マリア・カラニエミのグループのメンバーでもあります。ルイ・フィリップはイギリス在住のアーティストで、日本でも80年代から数多くのアルバムが紹介されています。デイブ・グレゴリーは元XTCのメンバーとして、ダニー・カミングスとアラン・クラークは元ダイア・ストレイツのメンバーとして、ケイト・セント・ジョンは元ドリーム・アカデミーのメンバーとして、UKロックのファンにはそれぞれおなじみです。S・アタンは東／東南アジアの音楽界で活躍しているマレイシアのアコーディオン奏者／プロデューサー。ボブ・ブロズマンはカリフォルニア在住のギタリスト／ハワイアン研究者で、沖繩の平安隆との共演盤が最近国際的に話題を呼んでいます。モドゥ・セックはドイツ在住のセネガル人打楽器奏者。松浦有希、吉川忠英、駒沢裕城、松永孝義、土屋玲子は東京のスタジオやクラブで多忙な毎日を過ごしている作曲家、編曲家、ミュージャンです。

HaLo came into being as a project centred around the vocals and words of Tokyo-based singer / lyricist / songwriter / arranger and photographer, ayako. She herself describes it as "a loose grouping of people" flexible enough to encompass all the many, varied people who found they could share in ayako's dream.

The concept of HaLo began with the idea of working together with people from different parts of the world to make three albums with colour motifs; 'blue', 'yellow' and 'green'. So, in 1998 ayako and producer, Satoru Fujii, began firing off countless e-mails, phone calls and faxes, and meeting with as many friends as possible. They crossed the globe looking for new collaborators and met with many like-minded friends.

The recording of the album in the main part took place between the end of that year and March of 1999, locations including Tokyo (Japan), London (England), Helsinki (Finland), Donostia (The Basque), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) among others. Finally, "blue" was the first of the albums to be finished.

Collaboration between artists of different countries is certainly not unusual. However, what sets this album apart is that there has been a detailed exchange of ideas from the songwriting stage, which have then been built upon by the flow of imaginative powers. A fundamentally different process to those productions involving contracts and hasty sessions.

There was no attempt here to make rootless music which takes us nowhere nor has this any relationship with the music which Japanese artists easily fall into the trap of producing, through confusing respect with imitation. In the clear, delicate performances centred on acoustic instruments, and in ayako's gentle vocals, one feels the serenity and intimacy only associated with the top pop standards.

Sincere, honest, tender, light, beloved, familiar....... When I listen to this music I think of the dreamlike beauty of grass and trees seen at the break of dawn in the early summer. I can only attribute this to those who have taken part in the making of this album having nature in their souls and the ability to bring it out of themselves. This music runs right into your soul, like delicious water for a thirsty body. The album reminds us that music is more than a form of personal expression, self-pitying, playing technics or just a product, but it is born of the waves of emotion from our hearts and our bodies.

Finally I would like to write a few words of introduction, not mentioned in the track notes, about the main contributors to this album. Timo Alakotila is a Finnish pianist / harmonium player who is a member of four outfits including the traditional fiddle group JPP. He is also a member of Maria Kalaniemi's band. She is one of the foremost accordion players in Finland. Louis Philippe is an artist living in Britain who from the eighties onwards has also had many albums released in Japan. Dave Gregory, ex- XTC, Danny Cummings and Alan Clark, ex-Dire Straits, Kate St.John, ex-Dream Academy will all be familiar to fans of UK rock. S. Atan is an accordion player / producer from Malaysia well known in the East / SouthEast Asia music world. Bob Brozman, the guitarist and researcher on Hawaii, lives in California and his collaboration with Takashi Hirayasu of Okinawa has recently been hailed internationally. Modou Seck is a percussionist from Senegal, now living in Germany. Yuki Matsuura, Chuei Yoshikawa, Hiroki Komazawa, Takayoshi Matsunaga, Reiko Tsuchiya are all songwriters, arrangers, musicians very active in the studios and clubs of Tokyo.
